Does Acupuncture Help Scoliosis?

What is Scoliosis?

Scoliosis is a common condition of the spine where a lateral curve is presented genetically or acquired. Around 20 percent of cases are caused by neurological disease, trauma, or a tumor. Often, the cause is unknown.

Scoliosis can lead to postural issues, muscle spasms, or legs that are different lengths. There are varying degrees of scoliosis. When the curves are more than 23 percent deviated, the heart and lungs may not function well. Common surgery involves Harrington rods, which are metal rods permanently implanted along the spine to straighten it.

Scoliosis often begins at a young age from a fall, causing a sacrum or tailbone misalignment, affecting the spine's growth and alignment. In the elderly, scoliosis may appear from osteoporosis, disc shrinkage, and postural muscle weakness.

At Relax Holistic, chiropractic and acupuncture treatments are geared toward long-term corrective care for this issue. If scoliosis is not addressed, it can affect the alignment of hips, knees, and feet, as well as gait. Chiropractic care can even improve symptoms from scoliosis surgery.

Acupuncture can be beneficial for scoliosis in several ways:

  1. Pain Reduction: Acupuncture can help alleviate pain associated with scoliosis by stimulating specific points on the body, which can release endorphins and block pain signals.
  2. Improving Spinal Alignment: Some studies suggest that acupuncture can help improve the Cobb angle (a measure of spinal curvature), leading to better spinal alignment.
  3. Muscle Relaxation: Acupuncture can help relax muscles around the spine, reducing muscle spasms and tension that often accompany scoliosis.
  4. Enhancing Overall Well-being: By promoting the flow of energy  in the body, acupuncture can improve overall health and well-being, which may indirectly benefit scoliosis symptoms.

At Relax Holistic, our doctors conduct thorough spinal exams and evaluate the feet, as the feet and spine are directly related. Custom orthotics may be necessary to support scoliosis treatment. Scoliosis treatments may include spinal manipulation, traction, electric muscle stimulation, acupuncture, and therapeutic exercise. Our team at Relax Holistic is here to answer your questions. Understanding Insomnia Treating Insomnia starts with balancing your Yin and Yang. Sleeping is Yin and waking is Yang. You have to do physical or mental Yang activity to become tired. To feel sleepy you need to be active during the day. There may be blockages in the meridians that affect sleep. Insomnia can also involve waking up frequently during the night, waking up too early, or feeling unrefreshed after sleep. Over time, this can take a toll on both physical and mental health. Things that can inhibit sleep are eating too close to bedtime, sleep apnea, caffeine after 3PM or overthinking. Our bodies are not designed to sleep in the daytime. How Acupuncture Works The acupuncturist will will check the body with a Traditional Chinese pulse and tongue diagnosis. Fine needles are inserted into specific points on the body to balance the flow of Chi. This will restore balance in the energetic channels of the body, called Meridians. Treatments improve overall well-being. Benefits of balancing the meridian pathways One of the primary goals of acupuncture is to balance the body's energy. When qi is flowing smoothly, it can help regulate sleep patterns and promote a more restful night. Reducing Stress and Anxiety : Many insomnia sufferers have stress or anxiety. Acupuncture is known to reduce stress hormones and promote a sense of calm. Regulating Sleep Hormones : Acupuncture can influence the production of melatonin, the hormone responsible for regulating sleep. Studies have shown that acupuncture has increased night-time melatonin levels, helping improve sleep quality. Alleviating Pain : Needles inserted in pain points promote endorphin release, and makes it easier to fall and stay asleep. Combining Acupuncture with Lifestyle Changes Stick to a Sleep Schedule : Go to bed and wake up at the same time every day. Create a Relaxing Bedtime Routine : Engage in calming activities like reading or taking a warm bath before bed. Limit Caffeine after 3PM and Alcohol : Exercise Regularly : Physical activity promotes better sleep Patient Testimonial- "I struggled with insomnia for years, trying every remedy and medication without much success. Acupuncture turned out to be a game-changer. After just a few sessions, I noticed a significant improvement in my sleep patterns. The needles didn't just help me sleep—they addressed the root causes of my insomnia. The anxiety that kept me awake at night began to melt away, and I felt more balanced overall. I highly recommend acupuncture to anyone dealing with sleep issues. It truly made a world of difference for me." If you have any questions , Book a Consultation. 310-652-3200 www.wehowellness.org
